Indoor plants are an option for those who don’t have much outdoor space. Apart from beautifying the room, the presence of this plant can also make the air fresher. Well, one type of plant that is unique and that you can try at home is the kokedama plant. So, what is kokedama and what makes it different from other planting techniques in general? Kokedama can literally be translated as “koke” which means moss, and ” dama” which means ball. These moss balls are a replacement for potted plants so that the plants have a unique shape and can be used as part of room decoration.
It’s quite easy to make with equipment you have around the house. In fact, you don’t need to be a gardening expert to create beautiful kokedama plants. If pots usually house plants, the kokedama technique takes the shape of a ball covered with moss, resulting in a natural pot that is very decorative and different from our perception of plant containers. Here are some ideas for kokedama plants and some tips to inspire you.
Kokedama plant technique
As you already know, kokedama means moss ball in Japanese and is a mixture of concepts and techniques commonly used in Japan. Includes Nearai which means planting plants in a clay bowl or on a rock, where the substrate is practically in the air, Kusamono which means planting plants in a small bowl, placed on varnished wood, and finally bonsai is a technique of growing plants such as trees and shrubs which forced to restrain its growth. The combination of these three techniques is what inspired the birth of the kokedama planting technique. One of the things that makes kokedama attractive is its originality. No two kokedama are the same as each is made completely by hand. Everyone can create their own version through plants planted in the soil mixture surrounded by a layer of moss meaning the pot itself is fully alive
Maintenance and placement of kokedama
Like plants in general, kokedama care is not much different from plants grown in pots. However, it is recommended that we water it by soaking or by sprinkling moss balls. If you want to decorate your house with kokedama, you have to choose the right place that is exposed to sunlight, for example near a window and most importantly away from air conditioning and gusts of wind. Then if you like a truly modern look, try hanging them on the ceiling and walls. This is a simple way to bring elegance and nature into a room. Get inspired!
