Koto has collaborated with US-based Abodu to design their first modular home labeled Abodu Home. This project is a prefabricated yard with off-grid capabilities, bringing Koto’s signature Scandinavian simplicity to life with a Californian twist. Based in the English seaside village of Westward Ho!, architectural studio Koto Design tries to adapt the warm vibes of a day spent at the beach and translate that into each of its projects. That’s why, this house is heavily influenced by Scandinavian simplicity and Japanese minimalism, the results come through the breezy, open floor layout and organic building materials.

Koto Design is known for its extensive catalog of sustainable prefabricated tiny houses that can be transported to locations around the world. In collaboration with US-based backyard home building company Abodu, the two studios teamed up to build a prefabricated small home that puts comfort first. Each of these tiny houses built with Adobu took about four months to complete off-site construction, while on-site assembly was completed within a few weeks.

On the outside, the cabin looks like one of Koto Design’s signature tiny houses, with a slightly arched roof. Although the original look would like to maintain the look of the unpainted wood elements, buyers can opt for other looks for a different finish. The organic facades blends in with large floor-to-ceiling windows meant to integrate with the semi-outdoor lifestyle, a touch common in Californian architecture.

Walking into the large windows has the function of keeping the interior of the living room cool and bright, just like spending a day by the beach. Integrated storage compartments line the interior space boundaries to maintain the flexibility provided by the open floor layout. For convenience, this cabin is also equipped with built-in furniture, such as a window bench in the dining room that provides a place to relax without adding more furniture that takes up a lot of space.
