Hedge House Design With Desert Vibes In Hollywood

Manhattan-based Jacobschang Architecture has successfully completed the Hedge House which is tucked behind the large circle of Ficus Nitida in the densely populated Hollywood neighborhood. True to its name, Hedge House takes advantage of the privacy afforded by elements of a landscape that is largely dominated by a desert vibe. This 30-year-old area is an important consideration for buying property. Its presence along the property offers a high level of privacy for the owner, but also an opportunity to reconsider the conventionally seen public spaces covering the front and side courtyards as private garden spaces.

Hedge House With Two Architectural Gestures

Hedge House design is organized around two architectural movements: a two-story interior lightwell that draws sunlight deep into the center and a spacious living room that connects directly to the garden. The material language of the house distinguishes the communal space from the private space. Plaster and cedar are the main materials and represent a smaller personal space. At the rear, plank-shaped concrete pillars lift the volume of stucco to create a porous connection between the open living area, garden and swimming pool. These concrete walls are supported laterally by integrated steel moment frames and filled with steel pivot doors.

Hedge House Interior

The interior space is integrated into the outdoor. Designed around a two-story offset light well. On the second floor, this element is able to form a sunken courtyard and connect the spaces of the master bedroom. The light filters through this space onto the central staircase which makes direct sunlight towards the center of the house.

Hedge House Exterior

The whole house is surrounded by a Ficus Fence which establishes constant reference from within the house. At ground level, these green walls connect to the garden area and provide an unobtrusive backdrop. From the top level, the hedge is topped at the height of the window sills, allowing residents to have direct views of the outdoors. In addition, the Hedge House is also a budget-friendly residence as electricity is distributed by 14 KW rooftop solar panels that support the main house, living area and heated swimming pool.
